About the man Nicholas Culpeper was a sharp critic of doctors and the medical establishment before trashing them was "cool". He undermined their "authority" at every turn by showing ordinary people how to treat themselves with plant-based remedies they could harvest in field and forest and prepare as medicines at home. He saw England's College of
Physicians as a gang of greedy, self-serving hypocrites
who were endangering the lives of their patients with
dangerous drugs. |
Modern uses of |
Culpeper saieth and we say Culpeper's The English Physitian herbal was written in the conversational style of 17th century England. We updated spellings - "juyce" is now juice and "vertue" is virtue - but the original sentence structure is preserved to show this legendary herbalist's quick wit and smart style. |

ADVISORY: Please be aware that the text from Culpeper's books
presented on this web site was written over 200 years ago, in the
mid-17th century. Nicholas Culpeper was not all-knowing and our
understanding of herbs and how they work has in some cases
changed drastically. The additional information is presented here
because the uses of the herbs listed have changed over time. If
you are seriously ill, or think you might be, please don't be
foolish: consult a healthcare professional you know and trust
before attempting to diagnose or treat yourself in any way.
